Cool Colors and Their Importance

Cool colors, purples, blues, and greens, are just as important as warm colors. But instead of instilling a cozy or bright sensation in a room, they have the power of expanding some features of a room and creating a "clean" feeling when used correctly.

How Do Cool Colors Make Us Feel?

Cool colors, for instance blue, have soothing and calming effects. While warmer shades remind of sun and heat, cool ones are best associated with waters and sky.

Obviously, we need such calm atmosphere in many rooms, in order to keep our thoughts organised, and our minds sharp.

Cool Equals Fresh

Because cool colors have a calmness effect, it also provides a feeling of freshness and cleanliness. We associate such colors with these feelings because cool colors tend to be very minimal in saturation, making the room feel lighter and more soothing.

Cool colors are good choices in entryways to buildings in warm climates, and in rooms that have a tendency to be warm, perhaps because of sunlight flowing into them.

Green Is Not Always Great

Most people agree that green surroundings provide a sense of being out in nature and a feeling of relaxation. Although using green on ceilings are typically associated with a protective atmosphere, it could result in a disturbing look when too bright or dark tones are used.
The same goes for big walls. Extremely dark tones on the walls may create a sense of irritation to the eyes, and overwhelmingly bright tones of green on walls usually create a feeling of sickness and discomfort.

Pick Out the Right Purple

Although the color, in general, serves as a mood enhancer and encourages nurturing tendencies, darker tones of purple represent gloom. Because of this, using a dark purple as the color of a large wall often creates laziness and inactivity in people exposed to it for long periods of time. It's good to be relaxed. But being unproductive has consequences. If this is a color you do want to use in large proportions, setting is as the main color of a bedroom is the best choice as its calming properties can help you relax.

Have the Right Amount of Blue

One of the world's favourite colours, blue is called the colour of the mind and is described as soothing, tranquil, serene and orderly. Blue is said to boost productivity and is therefore often used to paint office walls. To project an image of security, advertisement companies often use blue while marketing their products. However, it can also be a sign of aloofness, sadness or unfriendliness and this is said to be because of the apparent drop in pulse rate and body temperature upon exposure to blue.

So How Should You Decorate With Cool Colors?

green

When using it in a bedroom, instead of painting the walls green and leaving the ceiling white, how about the opposite approach? After all, it’s the ceiling that you get to look at when relaxing in bed. You can still paint one of the walls green as well. Make sure you also add a few other green accents throughout the room such as a green table lamp and patterned throw pillows. When wanting to achieve an atmosphere in your bedroom similar to that of nature and the outdoors, a dark green on walls paired with dark-stained wooden furniture and neutral-colored bed sheet is the key for this type of look.

purple

Purple is a color that gives out a sophisticated vibe and brings out the luxury in a room. It’s also a color that stimulates creativity and creates a pleasant ambiance so for those of you who like to write or study in the bedroom, purple is the perfect color for the walls. But you also need to take into consideration a variety of different aspects when using purple in a bedroom.

Purple absorbs light. Hence, mirrored furniture not only does justice to the color but also adds to the richness of the color. Again, the reflections from the mirrors let the room look adequately lit. Purple also looks beautiful when combined with white and with gray so consider these two colors when decorating the bedroom. In bedrooms that have small windows, you should opt for a subtle shade of purple as not to darken the room too much. A light shade can actually make the room seem brighter. You can use a more intense shade of purple that has a little bit more red in it than blue to give the bedroom a sophisticated and dramatic look. However, this look usually only works for rooms with large windows or glass walls.

For a living room that has purple walls, drapes and floor coverings, use plenty of whites to highlight the room.

This will stop it from becoming too dark which can lead to an oppressive feel. Pick a wall or a wall feature, such as a chimney breast, to create an accent, with patterned wallpaper that creates contrast against painted purple walls. Use darker purple tones for your carpet or rugs and lighter ones for your soft furnishings upholstery. Purple can create a glamorous, and sometimes feminine, look. Add a touch of sliver sparkle to create an even approach.

You can create some stunning purple looks with LED lighting, which will make a living room seem utterly up to date. Rather than purple furnishings, which can sometimes feel like they hark to a bygone era, purple lighting has a sophisticated feel. Avoid ultra-violet, however, and go for a warmer tone of purple.

blue

When using blue in a living room, keep the background pure with the same color on all four walls and add unexpected pops of color using pillows. It adds a surprising and exciting element to a room where stimulating conversation is wanted. Blue walls, white ceiling—it's the color combination's most tried-and-true use. This use of the color for a bedroom is perfect for creating a relaxed atmosphere. A deep midnight blue paint is a statement color, but when it covers a small space—like a bathroom—it can feel more like a whisper. To prevent that walls-are-closing-in-on-us feeling, paint only the top two-thirds of the room in your bold, dark blue. Bright white wainscoting and other details bring in light so the room doesn't appear smaller than it really is.

But adding color to a room doesn't have to involve paint. White walls and whitewash furniture in an entryway create a gentle backdrop for a collection of cool blue accessories and decorative elements. A vase filled with orange roses placed next to blue lamps and on top of a calm blue dresser adds a splash of contrasting color for visual interest.
